George Ratcliffe Woodward, a Church of England clergyman and hymn writer, was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire in 1848. He attended Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and later served at a variety of churches, including St. Barnabas in Pimlico, Little Walsingham in Norfolk, and St. Augustine's in Highgate.
